United States Congress and the European Parliament have already tried to quiz Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding how the company handles user data. The testimony included attempts by lawmakers to better understand how Facebook functions and is the company doing enough to safeguard the privacy of its users. However, a recent report by The Moscow Times pointed out that now Russia is looking forward to inviting Zuckerberg to testify before Russian leaders.

The report pointed out that Senator Anton Belyakov gave the suggestion to invite Zuckerberg while adding that Russian president, Vladimir Putin is pushing for “digitize the economy”. Belyakov went on to add, “I am absolutely confident that this is a person who has ideas to share and who is looking to the future.” The report added that Roskomnadzor, the Russian media regulator has had the social media website “in its cross-hairs” after Facebook failed to comply with the law that Russia passed in 2015.

The law required all technology firms to ensure that all the data of Russian users is stored on local servers inside the country. The senator went on to defend Zuckerberg but adding that “he spoke about information security, not giving access to personal data, preventing the dissemination of harmful content.” One thing to note here is that Russia was one of the main topics that US senators and European lawmakers quizzed Zuckerberg about.

If he accepts the invite and comes to the hearing, then Russian politicians are certain to revisit all the statements that Zuckerberg made regarding Russia as pointed out by Engadget. Speaker of the Russian parliament Valentina Matvienko added that she will issue the order and try to organize for Zuckerberg’s arrival. Russia is not the only country that wants Zuckerberg to testify as UK lawmakers have time and again asked him to come and testify regarding the Cambridge Analytica. He has time and again refuted the invitation
