Saavn today announced it has launched Saavn English in India with more than a quarter of a million songs. Saavn is a free music streaming service that is available online (desktop) as well as on most smartphone platforms including Android and iOS. So far Saavn’s portfolio consisted Bollywood and regional music.
Saavn has tied up with Sony Music and Universal Music for English content while it already has licensing deals with more than 300 Asian labels and claims to have 99 percent of the known catalog across Bollywood, regional, and devotional music. With the absence of similar music streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and Rdio in India, Saavn hopes to have the first mover advantage.
Having said that, its biggest competition would be Nokia’s Music Store that has over four million tracks and already has licensing deals with all the major music labels. The only advantage Saavn has is that it is a free service while Nokia Music Store is accessible only with select Nokia phones and is a paid-for service after the free subscription period expires. Dhingana and Gaana are other Saavn competitors but offer only Indian Bollywood and regional tracks.
