Samsung has announced the Galaxy S4, which is the successor to the record breaking Galaxy S III. Design wise the device stays true to Samsung’s design language and its exactly has all the numerous rumors portrayed it to be. The device features a new polycarbonate body, while retaining a design very close to its predecessor and the Korean giant has packed the device to the brim with a slew of software features.
The Galaxy S4 features a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080p pixels converting to 441 pixels per inch. Unfortunately, the device uses a PenTile pixel arrangement but at such high resolutions this should be a non-issue. The display can also be operated via gloves just like the Nokia Lumia 920. It’s international version is powered by the 8-core Exynos Octa 5 CPU clocked at 1.9GHz, 2GB of RAM and will be offered in 16GB/32GB/64GB memory variants with microSD card support. It also has a 2,600-mAh battery, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and also has a built-in IR Blaster. The US version of the smartphone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.
Samsung has left no stone unturned and has even added a thermometer and IR gesture sensor in addition to the standard suite of sensors. The Galaxy S4 also has Qi wireless charging capabilities and it will also offer a wireless charging pad.
On the photography front it features a 13-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. The camera is packed with a number of software goodies that include features like Dual-Shot, Drama Shot, Cinema Shot, Sound Shot, Beauty Shot, Eraser and Story Album. It can also shoot 1080p video.
As rumored an eye tracking feature called Smart Scroll makes an appearance in addition to a feature called Smart Pause. Samsung is also making the Galaxy S4 enterprise ready with its Knox suite.
Interestingly, the Galaxy S4 features a translator app called S-Translate and an app that utilizes the new sensors called S-Health, which keeps a tab on the user’s daily routine. The IR blaster on the Galaxy S4 can be used to engage universal remote like functionality and Samsung has even added a new version of Air View which was seen in the Note II but this time around it works with the human finger.
Samsung has beefed up S-Voice and it now features a Drive mode. For drivers, there is also a new mode called Air Gesture and people can control the phone with the use of gestures without actually touching it. Galaxy S4 users will also be able to share music via a feature called Group Play.
The S-health app will be integrated with a number of third party accessories but Samsung has its own S-band as well. There is also a new cover for the Galaxy S4 called the S-View cover that adds a small display that delivers notifications on the fassard.
The Galaxy S4 is also notably thinner and lighter than its predecessor at 7.9mm and 130 grams. It runs Android 4.2.2 with the latest version of the TouchWiz Nature UX.
Samsung says that there will be 3G and 4G versions of the device and later in the year it will even launch an TD-LTE version. It will go on sale by the end of April, however no India specific launch date was announced.
