Last year, Samsung introduced its Bixby smart assistant with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones. This year, smarter Bixby was unveiled at MWC 2018, and it already comes as a part of the Galaxy S9-duo. At the time of launch event, Samsung CEO DJ Koh had confirmed that the company will launch a voice-activated smart speaker by the end of this year. Now, details about the Bixby smart speaker have surfaced online.

According to a patent filed in November 2017, and published on May 31 2018, the Bixby smart speaker will come with 7 microphones made of two connected parts, and one of these will swivel over the other. The patent filing was spotted by LetsGoDigital. The patent further describes that all 7 microphones will be placed on the top half of the device, with each of them capable of receiving sound information separately.

Based what we can see on the schematics, the smart speaker could look like the Gear 360 camera. The device will also automatically rotate towards the person speaking to better benefit from speech recognition, the patent reveals. After turning around its axis, the speaker will then rotate horizontally to position itself towards the sound source. A roller is placed between the upper and lower part of the speaker for the movement, and it could resemble the Sphero BB-8 from Star Wars in terms of appearance.

Besides the microphones, the smart speaker would also feature a camera for face recognition of the user. And it will also come with a built-in touchscreen display to show photos and text, the patent reveals. If leak is to be believed, the touchscreen may also support S Pen, allowing Galaxy Note users to get the most from their stylus.

In terms of connectivity, the speaker could feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and GPS. Yes, it sounds a little futuristic now, but some of these features could enable you to use the Bixby speaker while on the go. The Bixby speaker could also include a media player, an internet browser and a photo album. Samsung is expected to launch the Bixby smart speaker sometime in the second half of 2018. With the Galaxy Note 9 launch rumored for August 9, we may see the unveiling at the event, or at IFA 2018.
