When Apple released the iPhone X with a full-screen display, users and Android OEMs criticized the notch. The implementation allows manufacturers to have more usable screen space on smartphones, while the area around the notch can be used for UI elements such as notifications. Several Chinese Android smartphones now come with a notch, and the likes of LG and OnePlus are also expected to have it on their upcoming flagship smartphones. And if the latest leak is to be believed, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9 could also embrace the notch, after all.

Yes, it comes as a surprise as Samsung had spoken at a length about the Infinity Display during the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 launch last year. But with most smartphone manufacturers adding a notch to their smartphones, and Google Pixel 3 also expected come with the notch, maybe Samsung is also thinking of following suit.

According to the leaked patent application files from China, spotted by Mobilekopen.net, Samsung may embrace the notch on its smartphone lineup. Just like the one on the iPhone X, the notch on the Galaxy smartphones is likely to house the earpiece, camera, and other sensors. Just like the Galaxy S9, the display on the smartphone will also curve gradually at the edges.

The patent diagram does not show any bezel on the bottom chin – similar to the iPhone X. There is also no fingerprint sensor on the front or back, which means Samsung could finally be employing under-display fingerprint sensor, along with facial recognition system. However, there is no clarity on whether we would see the display notch on the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S10 (Galaxy X).

The leaked patent filing schematics also hint at major design makeover at the back. The dual camera modules seem to be pushed to the edges, and placed horizontally, just like we have seen on the iPhone 8 Plus. This is the first time Samsung could move away from center-aligned design.

Lastly, most manufacturers are ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack, Samsung still doesn’t seem to have ‘courage’ to do away with it. Another surprising element is the lack of dedicated Bixby button, which means Samsung would rely on voice wake-up to invoke the smartphone digital assistant. Based on the reports, Samsung might launch the Galaxy Note 9 as early as July this year.
