Samsung has launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9, and it definitely is among the most powerful smartphones that have been launched yet this year. Samsung took this opportunity to team up with Epic Games, and Fortnite is initially exclusive to certain Samsung Galaxy devices and was promoted on the Galaxy Note 9.
Now the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 may not be a dedicated gaming smartphone, but it does have the specs to compete with the best of them. And so we are going to pit it against the top three gaming phones out there, namely Asus ROG Phone, Xiaomi Black Shark, and Razer Phone, to see which one can score one over the other.
Design and display
The first and the most important feature of a competent gaming phone is to have an awesome display. And in this department the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 features a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED QHD+ resolution display, The ROG Phone has a 6.0-inch Full HD AMOLED display, the Black Shark has a 5.99-inch Full HD IPS LCD display, and the Razer Phone has a 5.7-inch 2K HD IGZO LCD display.
Both the Galaxy Note 9 and Black Shark have screens with 60Hz refresh rate, while the ROG Phone has a 90Hz refresh rate. The Razer Phone however leads with 120Hz refresh rate. The brightest display among all four has to be of the Galaxy Note 9 with its Super AMOLED technology, and it offers extreme viewing angles and perfect blacks. The ROG phone and Black Shark are decent, but the remarkable one has to be the Razer Phone that uses its own IGZO technology, and makes it look incredible at that refresh rate.
In terms of the design, the Galaxy Note 9 has tiny bezels and comes in attractive colors with an aluminum and glass body. The Asus ROG also uses aluminum and glass body and has a RGB logo with s quirky design that befits a gaming phone. The Xiaomi Black Shark uses a metal unibody but the company has tried to make it ergonomic and it has a RGB lit logo as well. The Razer phone has a huge chin and forehead and is a metallic cuboid of sorts. But the huge chin and forehead have purpose, which are two awesome stereo speakers and the room to hold the phone without touching the screen.
Chipset and RAM
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with an Exynos 9810 SoC or Snapdragon 845 SoC based on the region while the ROG Phone as well as the Xiaomi Black Shark come with Snapdragon 845. The Razer Phone, on the other hand, comes with a Snapdragon 835. But the difference among the three phones sporting Snapdragon 845 is that the ROG phone has an overclocked version with a clock speed of 2.9GHz, while the others have a clock speed of 2.8GHz.
As for flash memory the Galaxy Note 9 comes with options of 6GB RAM, and 8GB RAM. The Asus ROG, Xiaomi Black Shark and Razer Phone all come with only 8GB RAM option.
Internal storage is an important issue since games do take up a lot of space, and require room to keep all its stuff. The Galaxy Note 9 has two storage variants of 128GB and 512GB, which can be expanded by another 512GB, and that can effectively give it almost a terabyte of storage. The Asus ROG phone comes with 128GB, and so does the Xiaomi Black Shark, with no options to expand on both. On the other hand, the Razer Phone comes with only 64GB internal storage but has options to expand up to 2TB which is massive.
Battery and connectivity
The next most important thing on a gaming phone, or any phone for that matter is the battery, and in this case all of the four phones happen to sport 4,000mAh batteries, and come with quick charging capabilities.
And as for connectivity, all the phones are capable of supporting all bands of 4G speeds, and come with Bluetooth 5.0 with the exception of Razer Phone that uses Bluetooth 4.2.
Though this is an important feature on most phones now, it does not comes on top of the list when it comes to gaming phones. The Galaxy Note 9 has the most impressive camera system among all the phones here for obvious reasons. It comes with an 8-megapixel auto-focus front-camera for selfies and video calling. And on the back of the phone it a dual-camera setup with 12-megapixel sensor with a dual aperture wide-angle lens (f/1.5 – f/2.4) paired with a secondary telephoto lens.
The ROG Phone has a 8-megapixel front camera and a dual-rear camera setup with a 12+8 megapixel sensor placement that use lenses with an aperture of f/1.8. The Black Shark has a 20-megapixel front camera that has an aperture of f/2.2 and a dual-rear camera setup with 12+20 megapixel sensors and lens with f/1.7 aperture. The Razer Phone again has an 8-megapixel sensor camera on the front with f/2.0 aperture and the dual-rear camera setup sport a 12+12 megapixel sensors with lenses of f/1.7 aperture.
With the exception of the Razer Phone all the other three smartphones come with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. But the Razer Phone has been updated with Android Oreo. With Android Pie rolling out, we are pretty sure that at least the Galaxy Note 9 will be updated while the ROG Phone and Black Shark have high chances of update. The Razer Phone is the only one we are not sure about since the company has not said anything in the matter.
All the four phone come with fingerprint scanners and the Galaxy Note 9 additionally comes with Iris scanning technology.
