Samsung recently started rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo update for its flagship smartphones, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ from last year. The update is yet to reach all the active Galaxy S8 duo, but the company might have already begun working on the Oreo update for its predecessor as well.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones working on all US carriers as well as the unlocked versions have been spotted running Android 8.0 Oreo on the WiFi Alliance. Sammobile reports that there is no information as to when the actual roll out of Oreo update will begin for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Samsung Turkey had revealed that these two devices will get Oreo update on April 13 but that day came and gone without any update bring released by Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge stopping by at WiFi certification is a good indication that the South Korean company has completed its testing and will soon release the update for all Galaxy S7 owners. Despite being the global leader in smartphones, Samsung has a relatively poor track record when it comes to releasing software update.

Android 8.0 Oreo was released by Google for its Pixel and Nexus-branded devices in August last year. Eight months after its release, the update is yet to make its way to most smartphones including flagship devices. The latest Android distribution numbers revealed that Android Oreo has a market share of just under 5 percent, which can be considered dismal for a major software update.

In comparison, Android Nougat released in 2016 is being used by 30.8 percent active users while Android Marshmallow is powering 26 percent of active devices. The fact that Samsung is the largest smartphone brand suggests that it has done little to change the situation around Android’s slow release cycle.

With the release of Android Oreo update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung will succeed in extending the life cycle of these devices. Samsung had announced a price cut on the Galaxy S7 Edge in India in February this year. The smartphone is now priced at Rs 35,900 for the 32GB variant while the variant with 128GB storage retails for Rs 37,900.
