Over the weekend, Samsung kicked off MWC 2018 with a bang by taking the wraps off the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Now, the company has sent out media invites for an event in India, where it is widely expected to launch the flagship devices.
Samsung’s new smartphones may seem like iterative upgrades over their predecessors, but there is plenty to keep buyers interested. While the overall design hasn’t changed much, there are subtle changes like the reduced bezels. At the back, the fingerprint sensor too has been relocated to below the camera module.
Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ specifications
The Galaxy S9 flaunts a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S9+ flaunts a 6.2-inch QHD+ display. Both displays feature an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, and support HDR10.
Under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC or an Exynos 9810 SoC depending upon the region of launch. The Galaxy S9 comes with 4GB of RAM, while the Galaxy S9+ comes with 6GB of RAM. Both devices come with storage options of 64GB and 256GB, and one can even expand them using a microSD card.
The camera department is what sees the biggest change, with both devices now supporting dual-aperture. In simpler terms, the camera supports f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture, and switches between the two depending upon the lighting conditions. When shooting in low-light conditions, the aperture switches to f/1.5, while in bright conditions, it switches to f/2.4.
As for the specs, the Galaxy S9 is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor. The Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, is equipped with a dual-camera setup at the back. This includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ feature 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries respectively with support for fast wireless charging. Both devices run on Android Oreo out-of-the-box. Another new feature on the smartphones is what Samsung calls AR Emoji. As the name suggests, it is Samsung’s take on Apple’s Animoji. The company however is adamant that its feature is nowhere inspired from Apple’s.
