Tuesday turned out to be exciting as Samsung finally introduced its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 smartphones in India. What also hit top news today was the launch of Vivo’s Apex concept smartphone, which was first detailed at MWC 2018. In the leaks segment, more details emerged on Huawei’s upcoming P20 lineup. From the telecom sector, Vodafone continued the price war with its all-new prepaid plan with data and calling benefits. Here’s an overview of all that made news today.
Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ India launch
The Galaxy S9 duo finally launched in India with prices starting at Rs 57,900 and Rs 64,900 for the base models. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ bring subtle design improvements, advanced hardware, and an overhauled camera. Both the new Galaxy smartphones will be available in the new Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Midnight Black color options. The flagship smartphones will start shipping from March 16. In addition to the smartphones, Samsung also rolled out its Samsung Rewards loyalty program for those who use Samsung Pay at PoS counters.
Vivo APEX concept phone launch
After announcing it at MWC 2018, Vivo today officially launched its APEX concept smartphone today in China. The USP of the smartphone is that it features an under-display fingerprint sensor which uses what is called as the “Half-Screen Fingerprint Scanning Technology”. The new type of fingerprint sensing technology makes it possible for manufacturers to further thin down on the bezels, and allow for a larger area for seamless authentication. The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, which is also one of the highlights of the smartphone. Price of the Vivo APEX has not been announced by the company.
Google’s March security update
Today, Google also made its Pixel and Nexus smartphones routinely secure with the roll-out of the March security update. The security patch comes with perfunctory bug fixes, and security updates for the smartphones. The OTA zip files have been posted online, and you can choose to manually flash the update. The patch reportedly resolves 16 issues, including vulnerabilities ranging from high to critical. In addition to that, there are 43 security fixes and three functional updates.
Huawei P20, P20 Pro, and P20 Lite prices leak
Huawei is expected to launch its new P20 series at an event on March 27. However, ahead of the launch, serial tipster Roland Quandt revealed the alleged prices of the P20, P20 Pro and P20 Lite smartphones. If the leak is anything to go by, Huawei P20 will be priced at €679 (Rs 54,000 approximately), the P20 Pro will cost €899 (Rs 72,000 approximately), whereas the P20 Lite will be priced the cheapest at all, at €369 (Rs 30,000 approximately).
Vodafone Rs 299 prepaid plan
Vodafone introduced its new Rs 299 plan, which offers prepaid subscribers data benefit with 1GB per day data quota. However, there are a few catches. The 1GB daily data is only at 2G speed. The plan is limited to Vodafone subscribers in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh circles. In addition to the daily data quota, the plan also offers ‘unlimited’ voice call, however, that comes with a daily and weekly limit. The calling is limited to 250 minutes per day, and 1,000 minutes per week. The plan comes with 100 SMS per day, and a validity of 56 days.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 MIUI 9.5 update
Xiaomi started rolling out the stable Android 8.0 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 update to its Mi MIX 2 smartphone. The update includes the December 2017 security patch. It is to be noted that the MIUI version is MIUI 9 Global 8.1.18 Beta, which means that there will be some bugs present. The company also rolled out the update to Mi Note 2 as well, which was launched in 2016.
