Samsung’s much-awaited Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones have been launched in India, and they are all set to go on sale starting March 16. There are many users out there who have been considering buying one of these phones, but are confused between the Galaxy S9 and its competition, with the Apple iPhone 8 being the hot rival. We pitted both smartphones based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they compete.
Price and availability
It’s been a little over six months since Apple launched the iPhone 8 in India, and the 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 67,940, whereas the 256GB storage variant will set you back by Rs 81,500. You can buy the iPhone 8 from leading retail outlets and also from e-commerce portals.
The new Samsung Galaxy S9, on the other hand, will go on sale starting March 16, and will be available online via Flipkart and local retail outlets. In terms of pricing, the 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 57,900, which is Rs 10,000 cheaper than the iPhone. Similarly, the 256GB storage variant will set you back by Rs 65,900, which is Rs 16,500 cheaper than the iPhone 8.
Display, chipset and RAM
Samsung’s Galaxy S9 comes with a 5.8-inch QHD AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, and dual edge curved display. The iPhone 8, on the other hand, comes with the same old boring 4.7-inch Retina HD display, and clearly loses the bezel-less war.

Both, Apple and Samsung have always focused on the camera aspect, especially today when a lot of photos are captured on smartphones. While Apple has improved the camera with a 12-megapixel sensor and f/1.8 aperture for better low-light photography, Samsung has added new tricks to its rear camera. The iPhone 8 can record 4K videos and slow-motion videos at 240fps.
The Galaxy S9 firstly comes with a dual aperture camera with f-stop ranging between f/1.5 (for low light) and f/2.4 (for day-light). It has a 12-megapixel resolution, and supports 4K video recording at 60fps, and slow-motion videos at 960fps in HD resolution.
Up front, the iPhone 8 comes with a 7-megapixel camera, whereas the Galaxy S9 comes with an 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.
Operating system, battery and connectivity
The Galaxy S9 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung’s custom UI on top, whereas the iPhone 8 runs on iOS 11. While the iPhone 8 is armed with a 1,821mAh battery, the Galaxy S9 is armed with a 3,000mAh battery, and both support wireless charging feature.
In terms of connectivity, both smartphones come with NFC, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 4G VoLTE. The Samsung Galaxy S9 also comes with dual-SIM card slots (hybrid slot).
The iPhone 8 comes with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner on the front for biometric authentication. The Galaxy S9, on the other hand, comes with a fingerprint scanner, Iris scanner, and face recognition feature, and a heart-rate sensor. Both smartphones also come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.
What’s more, the Galaxy S9 also comes with AR Emoji feature, which uses facial recognition to turn your face into an Emoji character, which can make your conversations more interesting. Clearly, the Galaxy S9 leads the iPhone 8 in every department, be it price or features.
