Samsung’s much rumored smart speaker has a name even before its official launch. The Bixby-powered smart speaker could be called Magbee, which sounds like a deliberate attempt from Samsung to make the name resonate with that of its digital assistant. The name for the smart speaker has appeared in a couple of trademark applications filed by the company in the US and Europe, setting some of the rumors to rest.

There is not much known about Samsung’s upcoming smart speaker except for the fact that it will be powered by Bixby. There are reports that the device’s audio prowess is being tuned by Harman, which Samsung acquired for $8 billion last year. While the trademark filing confirms the name, a patent application indicated that the speaker will have a dial. With the Magbee smart speaker, Samsung is also rumored to introduce some sort of wireless home audio solution that might integrate with SmartThings-based IoT devices.

Like Google Home and Amazon Echo smart speakers, Samsung Magbee will also include support for multi-room audio and multiple speakers firing simultaneously. While Samsung was initially said to launch the smart speaker alongside Galaxy Note 9 on August 9, there are new reports claiming the device will be made official at IFA 2018 in Berlin.

At Unpacked event next month in New York, Samsung is expected to launch the flagship Galaxy Note 9 smartphone and might launch the Galaxy Watch wearable device and Magbee smart speaker. Samsung is not known for introducing a number of devices at one event so there is a possibility that it might reserve one of these devices for its big unveil at IFA 2018 late August.

Smart speakers are growing in popularity with every passing quarter and Amazon leads the pack with its Echo speakers powered by Alexa. Google has been trying to fight Amazon with its Assistant-powered Google Home speakers but reports indicate that Amazon is moving its Echo devices faster than Google. With Magbee, Samsung will be a formidable challenge but the success will hinge on how Bixby responds to user commands.
