The day two of this week was quite pertinent in terms of news stories. The biggest story of the day definitely being the apex court’s orders of indefinitely extending the deadline for the mandatory linking of Aadhaar to mobile phones and bank accounts. Today Xiaomi also rolled out the MIUI 9 update for all its devices. Alcatel announced its 1x Android Oreo (Go Edition) smartphone in India. WhatsApp made some changes to the Delete for Everyone feature on iOS, and Intex partnered Reliance Jio to offers some special cashbacks. Here’s taking a look at these stories in brief.
Supreme Courts rule on Aadhaar linking
The apex court has today ruled an indefinite extension on the deadline for mandatory Aadhaar linking. The date was earlier set to March 31. The Supreme Court says that the government cannot insist on providing Aadhaar, even to issue Tatkal passports. The court said that there will be no deadline issued until the judgment on linking Aadhaar is pronounced. However, the deadline for subsidies, benefits will remain March 31.
Xiaomi MIUI 9
Xioami today started rolling out the stable version of its latest custom Android skin, MIUI 9, to all compatible devices, including the Redmi 1S and Mi 3. The MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM now extends to devices including the Redmi 2/Prime, Redmi 4A, Mi MIX 2, Redmi Note 4, and Redmi Note 5 Pro among others.
With MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM rolled out to Mi MIX and the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the edge-to-edge display phones also received the famed iPhone X-like full-screen support. MIUI 9 brings full-screen gestures feature available for phones like the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Mi MIX. The feature is supported on the Mi MIX, Mi MIX 2, Redmi 5, Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Vu Android TVS launches in India
Finally, Vu launched its new range of Android-enabled TVs in India that stand head-on against Xiaomi’s recently launched Mi TV 4A and Mi TV 4 series. Vu launched a 43-inch, 49-inch and 55-inch models priced at Rs 36,999, Rs 46,999 and Rs 55,999 respectively. Somewhat similar to Xiaomi’s new launched, the Vu TVs come with 4K UHD display supporting resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. The TVs also support built-in Chromecast feature.
The TVs run Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, and are powered by a quad-core processor, which is accompanied with 2.5GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage. The TVs come bundled with streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, Hotstar, Facebook, Sony Liv, and ALT Balaji among others.
Alcatel 1X with Android Oreo (Go Edition)
Alcatel today announced the 1X smartphone with Android Oreo (Go Edition), which is one of the first smartphones to run Google’s optimized OS for low-end handsets. The Alcatel 1X was unveiled at MWC 2018 last month alongside the Alcatel 5 and Alcatel 3 series.
The company has introduced the smartphone for the Indian market, but is yet to announce the official pricing for the device. It is expected to be priced in the budget category, given its entry-level specifications.
WhatsApp Delete for Everyone feature update on iOS
WhatsApp’s “Delete for everyone” feature on iOS today got a new time limit. The platform has extended the time limit to delete messages for everyone from 420 seconds (or seven minutes) to 4,096 seconds (or 68 minutes and 16 seconds). The change log says that you now have over an hour to delete the message sent to a friend or in a group.
Intex and Reliance Jio
Intex has joined hands with Reliance Jio to offer the ‘Football Offer’ on its 4G smartphones. As part of the offer, Intex 4G smartphones will be available with a cashback of Rs 2,200. The offer can be availed until March 31, 2018.
Reliance Jio Football Offer provides buyers of eligible smartphones with a cashback of Rs 2,200 in the form of 44 vouchers worth Rs 50 each. To avail the offer, you are required to do a recharge of Rs 198 or Rs 299. The cashback vouchers can be redeemed on subsequent recharges through MyJio app only.
