Smartphone shipments top 1 billion units for the first time in 2013: IDC


Worldwide smartphone shipments have finally crossed the 1 billion units mark for first time in 2013, increasing by 38.4 percent from the previous year to reach 1.004 billion unit shipments last year, IDC’s latest report highlights. There were 725.3 million units of smartphones shipped in 2012.

Samsung remained the clear leader with a global market share of 31.3 percent, adding a percentage point from 2012, while Apple’s smartphone share shrunk from 18.7 percent to 15.3 percent in a year.

In 2013, after the smartphones sales topped the feature phones sales for the first time in second quarter, their shipments continued to grow. Smartphones totaled for 55.1 percent of the overall mobile phone shipments, climbing from 41.7 percent in 2012. Smartphone vendors shipped a total of 284.4 million smartphones worldwide in the last quarter of 2013, recording an increase of 24.2 percent from the 229 million units shipped in the last quarter of 2012.

Samsung led the pack while Apple stood at second position, followed by Huawei, LG and Lenovo with each contributing just under 5 percent of market share in 2013.
