Snapchat has announced Snap Kit, a developer platform allowing other apps to integrate some of Snapchat’s experiences into their products. Snapchat is making it easier for developers to build Bitmoji avatars into their keyboards, display public Our Stories and Snap Map content. The API will also enable option to use Snap’s login for sign up and generate branded stickers with referral links that users can share back inside Snapchat.

Snapchat’s plan to launch a developer platform was first detailed by TechCrunch last month. While Snap Kit sounds similar to Facebook’s API tools, the young startup is taking privacy very seriously. The company does not want to make the mistake of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal and is limiting sharing your social graph with apps when developers plug into its Snap Kit.

The launch partners for Snap Kit include Tinder bringing Bitmoji to chat on its dating platform. Patreon will let fans watch creators’ Snapchat Stories from within its app while Postmates will offer order ETA stickers that can be shared in Snapchat. “As part of our efforts to bring Snapchat into the world, we are excited to launch Snap Kit, our new platform for developers that puts the privacy and security of Snapchat users first,” a spokesperson for Snapchat said in a released statement.

Snap Kit will offer four integration options including Creative Kit enhancing Snapchatters’ experiences with Snapchat by allowing apps to integrate their own services right into the camera. Then there is Login Kit to log in faster into other apps. There is Bitmoji Kit and Story Kit for allowing Snapchat experience into other applications. “Snap Kit will help Snapchatters tap into the best parts of other apps they love — and help those apps integrate some of Snapchat’s experiences into their products, while ensuring users’ account information is kept safe, secure, and private,” the spokesperson added.

Snapchat’s key focus here is privacy wherein it adds a limit of 90 days of inactivity before your connection with an app is severed. The Login Kit only shares your Snapchat display name and your Bitmoji. Apps taking advantage of Snap Kit won’t be able to ask for your email, phone number, gender, age, location or who you follow.

Snap has been seen as the immediate rival to Facebook but the social media giant has been quick to rip-off its key features. Now, with Snap Kit, Snapchat has a true challenger to Facebook and especially an option for apps and services to move away from Facebook’s API and integrate with Snap instead.
