The war for the best camera on a smartphone is all set get hotter according to a report on Sony Alpha Rumors. Taking its fight against the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Samsung Galaxy Zoom to an all new level, Sony is said to be readying what it calls the ‘Lens Camera’, which are a set of lenses that can be mounted on an Xperia smartphone to turn it into a point-and-shoot camera.

These are essentially a lens, an image sensor, memory card slot and Wi-Fi support all in a single package. They can be mounted on an Xperia smartphone and using Wi-Fi or NFC, the lens will connect to the smartphone and turn it into a viewfinder. All the photos that one clicks will be stored on the SD card in the lens or on to your smartphone.

According to the report, the first such lens to release will have the same image sensor and Zeiss lens as seen on Sony’s RX100 II, which was launched in India recently. The lens in the above photo is said to feature a 10x zoom f/3.3-5.9 G lens with a 1/2.3 inch 18-megapixel CMOS sensor

The idea no doubt sounds quite innovative as Sony will be able to cram in a lot of photographic power without worrying about adding bulk to its smartphones. But its success will depend upon the pricing of the lenses and if serious photographers are ready to carry a separate gadget with them every time they go outdoors.
