Earlier today, Sony launched the Xperia Z2 in India priced at Rs 49,990. As a flagship device, it competes against the likes of the HTC One (M8), Samsung Galaxy S5 and the soon to be unveiled LG G3. But while we wait to for the South Korean company to launch its flagship device, the Xperia Z2 is being compared to the G Pro 2, which was launched recently in India at a similar price point. We pit them against each other in a specification comparison; let’s see who comes up top.
The G Pro 2, with its bigger display, is taller (157.9mm) and wider (81.9mm) than the Xperia Z2 (146.8mm and 73.3mm). Despite the bigger size, LG has managed to keep the smartphone really slim and the G Pro 2 is only a shade thicker (8.3mm) than Sony’s smartphone (8.2mm). There is again only 12 grams differentiating the two devices.
While both the devices flaunt full HD displays bigger than 5-inch, the G Pro 2 is a good 0.9-inch bigger than the Xperia Z2 (5.2-inch). The extra inches affect the pixel density and the latter’s 424ppi is way ahead of the former’s 373ppi.
There is plenty of power on offer and both the devices will be able to take any and every task in their stride. The Xperia Z2 is powered by a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, while the G Pro 2 is powered by a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. Both the devices also include an Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM.
Sony and LG have also included a microSD card slot to expand the storage. They have coincidently also included the same sized battery on their devices — 3,200mAh.
But where the Xperia Z2 edges ahead is by boasting an IP58 certification. Sony’s flagship device, in other words, is water and dust resistant, something the G Pro 2 doesn’t feature.
On paper both the devices offer good cameras, though Sony’s 20.7-megapixel rear camera is better than the G Pro 2’s 13-megapixel snapper. On the front, the devices sport near identical front-facing cameras.
Both the devices run on the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box with their respective custom UI wrapped on top. This round then is a tie.
In conclusion, the competition runs quite close, with both the devices nearly matched on most counts. But the Xperia Z2 edges ahead because of the slightly better display and a better resolution rear camera. But most of all, it is the IP58 certification that tips the scale in its favor. As an icing on the cake, Sony is also offering its Smartband SWR10 priced at Rs 5,990 for free when you purchase the flagship device. That said, the two devices are targeted at two different audiences — the Xperia Z2 who want a smartphone, and the G Pro 2 who want a big phablet that can also double up as a tiny tablet.
