Tata DOCOMO has released an application which will allow its prepaid customers to activate various value services via Twitter. Just to be clear, this does not mean that a customer can get a top up done via Twitter on the fly. This feature is explicitly meant for the Tata DOCOMO Value Added Services application for which a customer has to subscribe for and fill in a certain amount. Once the service is active, the Twitter linking allows the user to access this service and the money automatically gets deducted from the customers account once the integration is complete. This basically means that a user could get new ringtones and other value adds via Twitter.
For registering their numbers customers have to go to the twitter handle of the company @tatadocomo, and type in #reg <Mobile Number> and eventually they will receive a pin code for verification through SMS.
Once the verification code is received, customers need to go to the twitter handle again, key in #code <Pincode> and they will get a retweet confirming registration. For activating value added services, a customer just needs to go to the handle (@tatadocomo) and key in #act# <Service><value>. The users will get a tweet back confirming activation of the service.
This seems like an innovative idea and is definitely the first of the kind in the Indian telecom space. Weather it will be very intuitive or popular, will be a completely different issue.
