Tata Teleservices is reportedly planning to expand their presence in the Wi-Fi hotspot segment by installing about 4,000 new hotspots in nine cities across India. According to a report on Economic Times, Avinash Gabriel, chief operations officer of the Wi-Fi business at Tata Teleservices has said that the company plans to set up these Wi-Fi hotspots in next two years to cater to the growing smartphone user’s demand for constant Internet connectivity.
Gabriel has reportedly said that Tata Teleservices’ Wi-Fi hotspot business had witnessed a huge increase in the data consumption on mobile phones since they started the service nine months ago. “From about 1 lakh logins in April last year, we now have 4.4 lakh logins, where the average time spent in each session is 40 minutes. So roughly, we’ve clocked 35 million minutes of usage as of January, up from 18 million minutes in April,” Gabriel told the publication.
This is mainly due to the increase in the smartphone users, that Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces are expected to become an important factor, Gabriel added.
According to a recent research report by IDC, smartphone market in India witnessed a growth of 171 percent last year to 44 million devices from 16.2 million in 2012. It was mainly due to the high penetration of sub-$200 smartphones launched by local as well as big vendors, that the usage of data through smartphone also grew exponentially and is further expected to grow multi-folds in the coming years.
Tata Teleservice currently has 540 working Wi-Fi hotspots on various airports, restaurants and companies. Wi-Fi solutions usually are cost effective in terms of deployment and rollouts. Moreover Wi-Fi airwaves are free, unlike the 3G and 4G network services for which an operator has to buy spectrum and mobile permits.
