Tech Mahindra makes rape alarm app free for all

Tech Mahindra has made their ‘FightBack’ application, designed for making the streets safer for women, free after the fatal gang-rape of the 23-year-old medical student in Delhi. The app tracks the location of the user and if she comes under threat then a panic button lets her send an alert within seconds that will broadcast her location anonymously.

While signing up, the user can give the mobile number and email addresses of five contacts who would get the alerts. Users can also sign-up with Facebook to have geo-tagged alarms posted on Facebook. The website of the app includes a map of live alerts with time and place of the alerts for public viewing while keeping the identity of the victim anonymous.

The app was first launched in 2011 for an annual subscription of Rs 100 per year but Tech Mahindra has given free access to everybody after the gang-rape on December 16. They are also in talks with the Delhi Police and if an alliance does come into effect then users who give their consent will be able to send alerts to the police when they press the panic button, FT reports.

You can visit the website and signup for the FightBack app here.
