Telegram 4.0 update: Video messages, bot payments, and more

Here’s all that has been added to the instant messaging service with over a billion users.

Telegram has received a slew of features in its latest version bringing a subtle combination of digital payments, artificial intelligence, and video messaging. The Telegram v4.0 now boasts bot-channeled payments, Instant View platform, and access to video message for non-Telegram users. The latest update is available for both iOS and Android. If you are a Telegram user, here are the key changes to the service you should know about before you hit update.

It’s about videos

After Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strong push towards making social networking purely video-based in a few years’ time, a lot of services are following suite and introducing related features. With Telegram v4.0, users can now send video messages. To do so, simply tap on the mic icon to switch to camera mode and hold the camera icon and record a video message. To send the message, simply release the recording button and the video will be sent. You can also lock the camera in recording mode by swiping up. The feature now also works with voice messages.

Before any video is sent, Telegram compresses it for swift processing.  These video messages are automatically downloaded and auto-played. You can change this default by heading to the settings panel and make tweaks. The duration supported is of up to 1 minute.

Watch it through Telescope

Blending a bit of public social media into instant messaging, the new update allows users to host public videos. This basically means you can put up a video which can be viewed by anyone from Telegram’s public channels. Even those who are non-Telegram account holders can view these video messages. The dedicated video hosting platform would prove a boon for bloggers who want to connect with their audience on a larger scale, without leaving their personal source of communication. Additionally, users can also share these public video messages on other social media channels including Facebook and Twitter, thereby increasing the potential of such videos to go viral beyond the Telegram ecosystem. Every video posted on public channel on Telegram will also be uploaded to and have a public URL there.

Pay the bot

The year 2017 is marked to ride high on artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital assistants, and bots. In the new update, Telegram users can make digital payments using the service. For example, you can order goods from merchant bots and pay for the purchase directly through the app. When you tap Pay, you’ll be asked to fill in your credit card and shipping information and confirm the payment. Users have the option to save card for future purchases. Additionally, Bot Payments support Apple Pay for a more seamless experience. ALSO READ: Google Duo gains audio calling support; here are 6 other apps for voice and video calling

It’s an Instant View Platform

Call it your own customized news feed within a messaging app, Instant View allows users to read articles or blog from any publication in a neat layout. Instant View also supports images, videos, and other media. It is especially helpful if the source website is not optimized for mobile devices.  With Telegram v4.0, anyone will be able to create their own templates for websites. To initiate the process, Telegram is also launching a $200,000 crowdsourcing competition for template makers.

In the new version, users can also tweak how their Instant View articles appear; right from font to theme. You can also quickly copy or share text within an article by simply long tapping.
