Typing without looking at touchscreens could be possible in future with ‘PocketTouch’

A few researchers at Microsoft have developed a new technology called PocketTouch which will allow you to type on your touchscreen devices without even looking at it. You will be able to type on your pocket and the device underneath will be able to recognize your handwriting. With PocketTouch’s handwriting deciphering software, even the worst of handwriting will be recognized and you’d be able to send those short messages without breaking eye contact during meetings or classroom lectures. Hit the break to read on…Most touchscreens are calibrated in a static way, only responding to direct touch with a finger and rejects even the slightest of different signal. However, PocketTouch, in contrast to regular touchscreen tech calibrates continuously by adapting to different kinds of fabrics and hence interprets signals even through cloth.
Though it is a major breakthrough and we see it as the evolution of the concept of touchscreen displays but its usage is still very limited. PocketTouch hasn’t yet been tested on smartphones and can’t replace the major operations that we perform on touchscreen devices such as composing mails or browsing the web (these require you to look down at the screens). Its only a step further where you can eliminate the need to gaze at your device for the basic short-messaging, especially where its considered uncouth to stare at your phone during a conversation.
