This year’s Mobile World Congress had a lot of interesting stuff. But nothing caught our attention quite like the Vivo Apex concept smartphone. Now it seems, the concept is soon about to become a mass-produced reality.
Vivo has sent out media invites for a launch event in Shanghai, China on June 12, GSMArena reports. Looking at the invite, it seems like Vivo is finally ready to bring the Apex to consumers. The timeframe of the launch also sits perfectly with what was mentioned during MWC 2018. It will be interesting to see whether Vivo sticks with the ‘Apex’ name or comes up with another official nomenclature.
The highlight of the Vivo Apex is no doubt its truly full-screen design. Up front the screen is surrounded by near-invisible bezels measuring 1.8mm on the sides, and 4.3mm at the bottom. The device itself is also quite thin measuring 7.8mm. To achieve the truly bezel-less look, Vivo has embedded the earpiece and other sensors under the display. Vivo has also brought over the under-display fingerprint sensor from its X21 UD smartphone.
Another noteworthy aspect of the device is the sliding selfie camera. Essentially, the front camera pops out from the top of the device. The company says, the camera takes about 0.8 seconds to completely pop out. While novel and quite unique, it remains to be seen just how sturdy the mechanism truly is.
Vivo Apex specifications
The smartphone flaunts a 5.99-inch full HD+ OLED display with COF technology, and an over 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood is the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. It also boasts Hi-Fi audio experience with System in Package technology, and is also equipped with three amplifiers and a DAC.
We will surely come to know more about the Vivo Apex’s details at the event on June 12. The company will no doubt also reveal if it plans to launch the smartphone in markets outside China.
