Greetings. Just one more day before weekend so hang tight. The idea of a smartphone with pop-up selfie camera is real and you can buy one from Vivo starting July 21. The smartphone shows the future of mobile devices as displays get bigger and bezels disappear.
In other launch stories, Xiaomi launched Mi Max 3 in China while HMD Global took silent approach to debut its entry-level Nokia 3.1 in India. Corning launched Gorilla Glass 6 as the successor to Gorilla Glass 5 and says your next flagship smartphone has a better chance to survive when you drop it accidentally. Here is a rundown of all the major tech news:
Vivo NEX launched in India at Rs 44,990
Vivo NEX has been launched in India at Rs 44,990, which is surprising for a smartphone that demonstrates future vision. The NEX will be available from Amazon India and Vivo e-store starting July 21 and comes with one time free screen replacement.
Smartphone makers have found a number of ways to offer larger and shrink the bezels around it. One of the common ways to do so is adding a notch but smartphones like Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X differ that notion. The NEX’s marquee feature is the pop-up selfie camera which comes out of an enclosure only when you need it. It is a cool trick and worthy of praise when you see for yourself.
Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is the new battery king
Xiaomi Mi Max 3, the third-generation phablet from the Chinese smartphone maker is now official. It was launched in China early today and it features a 6.9-inch screen with Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 display. The most interesting aspect of the Mi Max 3 is its massive 5,500mAh battery.
In terms of specs, the Mi Max 3 is not much different from that of Redmi Note 5 Pro. It has a Snapdragon 636 CPU, up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage. A dual rear camera setup and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone starts at 1,699 (around Rs 17,200) and should soon make its way to India.
Samsung could launch $300 Bixby smart speaker at August 9 event
We are inching closer to the launch of Galaxy Note 9 and at the big event, Samsung could also launch its much rumored Bixby-enabled smart speaker. Samsung’s Bixby smart speaker is said to be priced at $300, which makes it a premium offering that will challenge Google Home Max, Apple HomePod and Amazon Echo Show.
Samsung struggled to make Bixby available alongside the Galaxy S8 launch last year and its assistant is yet to match the level of Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. It is not immediately clear how better Bixby will be on the smart speaker and how Samsung plans to stand out in this space.
Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 6 will let your phone survive 15 drops
If you have a smartphone with shattered glass then this new protection glass from Corning might be meant for you. The New York-based Corning launched Gorilla Glass 6 as the replacement to Gorilla Glass 5 last evening and claims it can survive 15 drops from about one meter.
The Gorilla Glass is the default protective glass on top of most flagship smartphones and the Gorilla Glass 6 should be the one supporting the display on next generation premium flagship devices. Corning says 45 major brands currently use Gorilla Glass and Apple has made separate investment in the company.
OnePlus not yet ready to add fast wireless charging
With the launch of OnePlus 6, OnePlus revamped its flagship smartphone design by switching to metal and glass design. The switch to glass back often enables wireless charging but OnePlus decided to stick with wired charging for now.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau says it did not add wireless charging since the technology is without compromises. He notes that wireless charging is not enough for most consumer application and plans to add the feature on future flagship devices.
Nokia 3.1 comes to India
HMD Global has launched Nokia 3.1 in India as it tries to expand its market share in the entry-level segment. The smartphone comes with a taller 18:9 display, MediaTek octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.
It is priced at Rs 10,449 and will be available exclusively from July 21 on Paytm Mall and other retail stores. The smartphone comes with a number of offers including data offers from Idea and Vodafone.
