Vivo NEX, the first truly bezel-less smartphone, is set to debut on June 12. While Lenovo promised to launch the first bezel-less device, it instead launched the Z5 with notch. The NEX though promises to be the first smartphone that has nearly 100 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Vivo has already demonstrated that it is capable of building a true bezel-less phone when it showcased Apex concept with no bezels at Mobile World Congress in February. Now, the company is preparing to launch the real product with no bezels or chin or notch in the name of NEX. Reports so far indicate that Vivo will launch three smartphones named NEX, NEX A and NEX S next week.
While the final specifications of NEX series leaked recently, we now have our very first look at the smartphone. The Vivo NEX has appeared in video on a popular channel called Unicorn Show in China. The video shows the full-screen display of the smartphone with no visible bezels or notch and how it compares with edge-to-edge display on the iPhone X. The video also confirms the pop-up periscope-style selfie camera that is hidden when not in use.
Another major change with Vivo NEX is its fingerprint sensor embedded within the display. With Apex, Vivo detailed its plan to offer in-display fingerprint sensor covering nearly half of the screen. Vivo is said to launch at least two models – one catering to flagship segment, and another one to the premium mid-range market.
The mid-ranger could be called NEX A, and will be powered by Snapdragon 710 chipset coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. It will feature a large 6.59-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2316×1080 pixels, and taller aspect ratio of 19.3:9. The smartphone is also said to pack a 4,000mAh battery and support fast charging at 22.5W, which could mean faster than Dash Charge from OnePlus.
The Vivo NEX will feature a vertically stacked dual rear camera modules with a resolution of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixels. The pop-up selfie camera will use an 8-megapixel sensor. Vivo NEX series will be equipped with features dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and LTE.

Smartphone makers have been struggling to find a way for true bezel-less design that also includes a front camera. While notch has emerged as the most viable solution, it also tends to be obtrusive with user experience. With NEX, Vivo will have the most unique solution yet, but it is not clear how long the selfie camera will last since it includes mechanical moving elements.
