We have been hearing that Vivo is likely to launch a smartphone with fingerprint sensor integrated into the display. Now, a prototype Vivo smartphone boasting the in-display sensor has been spotted online suggesting that the smartphone that is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2018. Analyst Patrick Moorhead has revealed that we’ll first see under-display fingerprint reader in Vivo smartphones.
The image reveals a Vivo smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor getting unlocked with just a tap. Last week Synaptics announced that it has begun mass producing its in-display fingerprint sensors, and one of the top-5 smartphone maker will be using this technology.
According to Forbes, Vivo is likely to be the first company that will test out the new sensor on its smartphone. The technology, named Clear ID, comes with a fingerprint scanner below the display, which can be used to unlock the phone. Synaptics claims that its technology is faster than the 3D face recognition technology introduced by Apple on its flagship iPhone X. Further, the company says that 70 million units of the component will be made available to the market in 2018.
Synaptics further elaborates that “the Synaptics multi-factor fusion engine combines authentication scores from multiple biometrics to determine verification.” Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Synaptics will demo Clear ID at CES 2018. With ultrasonic fingerprint authentication, manufacturers can use the real estate below the device since the technology can function through the display. The Clear ID FS9500 are reportedly designed for smartphones with infinity OLED displays.
Additionally, a report from Korea claims that other Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi and Huawei might also launch smartphones with this feature. Huawei P11, which is said to launch in the year 2018, could sport the on-screen sensor.
The fingerprint sensor has become a necessity in 2017. According to a recent report smartphones with a fingerprint scanner will cross a billion units in 2018. The penetration of fingerprint sensors in the low-end smartphones will increase next year due to rising scale and declining cost of the fingerprint sensors.
