Vivo X20 Plus UD, the world’s first smartphone with under display fingerprint sensor, is now official. The technology was rumored to debut first on smartphones from major brands like Apple or Samsung, but Vivo has pipped the tech giants to launch the first commercial smartphone with a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display.
The Vivo X20 Plus UD is a not a new device by any means and it was also recently showcased at CES 2018. As the name implies, the smartphone is just a modified version of company’s existing X20 Plus device, but ships with a fingerprint sensor integrated into the display. The smartphone has been developed in collaboration with Synaptics, the US-based company known for its sensor technology.
Vivo’s smartphone uses Synaptics Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensor, which illuminates the display to read the unique pattern of a fingerprint to authenticate the owner of the device. The in-display sensor is placed between the glass and OLED panel while the actuating PCB is placed underneath the OLED display. The only major drawback of this Synaptics fingerprint module is that it works only with OLED displays, and not LCD displays.
With most smartphone makers now going in the direction of bezel-less design, the industry has been looking for ways to relocate the fingerprint sensor. While some have moved the sensor to the back and others like Apple have gone all in on facial recognition, the new technology embedding fingerprint sensor under the display is a breakthrough in the world of smartphones.
