Vivo won the unique distinction of being the first to market with a smartphone accommodating an in-screen fingerprint sensor at CES 2018. While Vivo showcased the device at the world’s largest consumer electronics gathering, it didn’t share particular details of the device bearing the feature.
Vivo claimed that the smartphone with in-screen fingerprint sensor will launch in early 2018, and it seems the device will arrive as early as next month. Vivo X20 Plus UD, a version of X20 Plus with under display fingerprint sensor has arrived on TENAA, indicating its imminent launch in the retail market. The major difference in terms of design is there is no square-shaped fingerprint sensor at the back.
In terms of specifications, we are looking at a mid-range device with 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display, and support for 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone uses Synaptics Clear ID, which illuminates the display to read the unique pattern of the finger to authenticate owner of the device. The technology currently works only on devices with OLED display, and does not support LCD panel.
Other specifications include Snapdragon 660 chipset coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The smartphone has dual rear camera setup with 12-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. There is a 12-megapixel front camera for selfies with f/2.0 lens. The smartphone will be backed by a 3,800mAh battery.
Vivo X20 Plus UD will showcase the new technology to consumers before it becomes mainstream later this year. With shrinking bezels and disappearing headphone jack, it is clear that under-display fingerprint sensor is going to achieve mass adoption this year. With Vivo debuting the technology, it needs to be seen when other manufacturers adopt the feature for their devices.
