Vodafone, Airtel, Matrix international roaming pack may lower your phone bills by 90%; here's how

With telcos' new international data scheme, there is no need to look for Wi-Fi zones at hotels and airports anymore.

If you travel abroad, what dreads you the most is probably high mobile bills. Thanks to telecom companies like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Matrix, international roaming packs could cost betwee 60 and 90 percent less.

According to ET, telecom operators are offering unlimited data use and calling along with free incoming calls. Keeping in mind the high level of competition, Matrix is reducing its rates by 25 percent as compared to last year. For instance, the company is offering 500 MB data, free incoming calls, 50 minutes local calls to India with a validity of 1 month for Rs 1,999. However, please note that the rates may vary according to the destination and plan you choose. Matrix said its services are 25 percent cheaper than other telcos. Having said that Matrix Cellular has recently also come up with ‘Summer Offers’ on prepaid SIM cards for travellers planning to visit USA, UK, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

The company is offering new prepaid plans Rs 2,999 for countries including USA, UK, Europe & Australia and Rs 999 for Singapore, Thailand & Malaysia. The Rs 2,999 plan will offer unlimited incoming calls, local calls, calls to India and unlimited data, while the Rs 999 plan will offer unlimited local calls and 5 GB data.

Citing a reasonable plan from one of the telecom companies, Prashant Singhal, telecom leader at global consulting major EYsaid, “The range of discounts could be almost 90% for a heavy voice and data user in a long duration to a 65-70% for a light user, in a short duration, say a couple of days”. The telecom operators have reduced the cost so much so that the data charges have gone down to Rs 3 per MB. Previously the same was available for around Rs 600 per MB.

Singhal further states that going by the industry standards, at the end of the trip, the bill would come to about Rs 1 lakh for a week-long trip to the US. The 1 lakh bill will mostly likely include 10 minutes of incoming calls, 10 minutes of local calls, 10 minutes of calls abroad, and five hours of Internet connectivity per day. However, he says that the offers telecom operators are putting forward now will reduce the bill to as low as Rs 10,000.

Having said that, bigger players like Vodafone, Airtel and Idea Cellular are too catching up with such offers. The companies introduced many international roaming packs that offer free incoming calls, free texts to India and other data benefits.

Vodafone is offering free incoming calls, outgoing calls at Re 1 per min, data at Re 1 per MB in 44 other countries including the US, UAE & Singapore. Vodafone is offering unlimited voice and data packs with deals starting Rs 2,500 for a week and going up to Rs 5,000 for a month. Again, the rates might vary according to the country you plan to visit.

On the other hand, if you are an Airtel user, you can sign up for pack rental ranging from Rs 3,999 for 30 days to Rs 649 for a single day. Under the scheme, Airtel will offer unlimited incoming call for free 5GB and 500MB of data respectively for the above-mentioned plans and 100 free SMSs.
