It’s not new for pranksters to find new ways to crash a messaging app or one’s smartphone. Sometimes the intentions are seemingly innocent, while at other times they are nefarious. A new buggy message found on WhatsApp falls in the first category.
There are a couple of messages doing rounds that can potentially crash WhatsApp on Android. In some cases, these messages could even crash your smartphone. In both cases, the messages have hidden special characters that can change text behavior. A bunch of these invisible symbols can cause WhatsApp to freeze.
One message reads, “If you touch the black point then your whatsapp will hang”, followed by the second line with a ‘black dot’ and the words “t-touch-here”. Needless to say, touching the black dot crashes WhatsApp, FE reports. The second message, spotted on Reddit, is similarly innocent looking. It reads, “This is very Interesting! <laughing emoji>…Read More.” Clicking on read more will again crash WhatsApp. This buggy message is said to crash the app on both Android and iOS.
While these messages crash WhatsApp, there doesn’t seem to be anything malicious about the prank. Still, it is advisable to not click on such messages, especially if they are sent from unknown people.
It’s not just Facebook-owned WhatsApp, but other messaging apps too have fallen victim to such buggy messages. Earlier this year, it was reported how sending a string of Telugu characters could crash iMessage. Apple promptly fixed the bug in the next iOS update.
