WhatsApp is again under the spotlight for the wrong reasons. A quick look on the internet shows users complaining about a new bug that lets blocked users send messages. This bug seems to have hit both the iOS and Android apps post the latest update. Update: We have learnt that WhatsApp is aware of the issue, and is in the process of rolling out an update to fix it.

The bug was first reported by WABetaInfo on his Twitter profile. The tipster was reportedly barraged with messages from users complaining about how their blocked contacts were suddenly able to send them messages. In addition to sending messages, blocked users reportedly will also be able to see a person’s WhatsApp profile photo, and Status. The blocking feature, as the name suggests, lets you stop any person from accessing your profile, see your photo or Status, and also send messages. This feature is of utmost importance to help users remain safe from stalking or any other manner of online abuse.

This bug however seems to be only affecting a particular set of users. The BGR India team tried sending messages to each other after being blocked, and were unable to. We have reached out to WhatsApp regarding this bug, and will update the post once we hear from the company. Following are some of the users on social media complaining about this new WhatsApp bug.

In the meantime, online reports have come up with a solution to this problem. This includes going to a person’s contact page on WhatsApp, unblocking and then blocking them again. Seems like the age old urban tech remedy of resetting to solve unsolvable problems. Are you facing this problem on your WhatsApp iOS or Android apps? Does the solution mentioned above help solve it?
