Situational Awareness: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is yet to speak on the Cambridge Analytica saga. He has been summoned by US and UK government authorities to detail company’s data policy. In the week ahead, Zuckerberg is expected to enlighten the community about the whole fiasco while its stock value continues to tank in NASDAQ trading.

Facebook also caught itself in wrong foot when WhatsApp co-founder tweeted support for #DeleteFacebook movement. It remains to be seen whether Facebook digs its own grave by staying silent and forcing regulators to take charge of the platform with over 2 billion monthly active users. However, the world of technology continues to be engaging with new details emerging on upcoming Mi MIX 2S and WhatsApp’s debut on KaiOS. Here is everything you need to know from the world of technology:

WhatsApp co-founder tells everyone to delete Facebook

Brian Acton, who co-founded WhatsApp and later sold it to Facebook for record $19 billion in 2014, believes that it is time to delete the social media platform. Acton tweeted, “It is time. #deletefacebook” early in the day, receiving over 6 thousand retweets, 13 thousand likes and 853 replies. While 2017 belonged to #DeleteUber movement, 2018 is definitely going down as #DeleteFacebook movement.

Facebook has been built on the motto of ‘Move Fast and Break Things’ and it has grown to such enormous levels that it has forgotten to secure its platform from abuse. Last Friday, it disabled the account of Cambridge Analytica, a big data firm for abusing user data and its implications still remain unclear. With Facebook’s prolonged silence and the spread of misinformation by Russian troll farms, the platform is losing the faith among its audience sooner and faster.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S Won’t Include a Selfie Camera Notch

Xiaomi is doing the finest thing by not adopting the herd mentality. The next flagship dubbed Mi MIX 2S from the Chinese smartphone maker will not feature a notch first seen on Essential Phone and iPhone X and now predominantly copied by the likes of Oppo, Vivo and Asus.

The lack of a notch was confirmed by official teasers of the device posted by the company. The smartphone is expected to be vastly similar to its predecessor and use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. There will be enhancements in the camera department with the smartphone expected to get a new image sensor and AI features.

JioFi JMR815 4G LTE Hotspot Launched in India

Reliance Jio has quietly added another JioFi model to its arsenal of 4G-only devices. The new JioFi is priced at Rs 999 and is available from Flipkart but what makes it different from its predecessor is the support for download speed up to 150 Mbps.

The new JioFi comes with support for 4G calling and 64GB of expandable storage. The 4G dongle designed in India comes with one year warranty and has useful notification lights for battery, 4G and WiFi signal strengths. It also supports multi-device connections and allows up to 32 users to connect with 31 on WiFi and 1 on USB.

WhatsApp might bring native app to KaiOS

WhatsApp’s next major update could be native support for KaiOS, a smart feature phone platform adopted by Reliance JioPhone and Nokia 8110 4G. WABetaInfo has discovered references to support for KaiOS with the new version released for Windows platform.

It shouldn’t be a surprise considering the popularity of KaiOS and the fact that WhatsApp parent Facebook is already one of the leading developer supporting the ecosystem. WhatsApp currently has over 1.5 billion monthly active users while KaiOS has a reach of over 6 million users thanks to sales of JioPhone. If WhatsApp brings its platform to KaiOS then the platform will find even greater following in country like India where the app is already popular.

MIUI 9.5 Is Coming Soon to 30 Xiaomi Smartphones

Xiaomi has announced MIUI 9.5, an incremental update to its MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The Chinese smartphone maker has released the Global Stable ROM and confirmed that it will be available for 30 devices in the Redmi, Mi MIX and Mi Max series.

Xiaomi did not detail the new features coming with the update but it released a tentative timeline for the release of the update. The new version is being planned to reach all the supported deviced by the end of April. Xiaomi is yet to detail its plan for release of Android Oreo update for its devices.

Samsung Carnival on Amazon India

Samsung announced ‘Samsung Carnival’ in partnership with Amazon India where it is offering cashback and discount on its smartphones and other consumer devices. The offer can be seen as a way to combat the sales of Xiaomi’s new Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 devices.

As part of Samsung Carnival on Amazon India, the Galaxy A8+ (2018) model with bezel-less design, 6GB RAM and dual front cameras is available for Rs 28,990.
