WhatsApp could soon support group video calling feature

WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging platform with 1.5 billion monthly active users and has a userbase of 200 million in India.

WhatsApp will soon allow users of its messaging platform to add up to three participants in a group video call. The feature is said to arrive first on Android, but it is not clear whether the group video calling support will be available on Windows 10 Mobile and iOS as well.

Last year, WhatsApp added a number of new features including the ability to make voice and video calls. The current version of WhatsApp allows its users to make a video call with only one person. With the new feature, WhatsApp is expanding the video calling feature and adding support for group video calling with support for three participants.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature will be first pushed to beta version 2.18.39 sometime soon. Once the feature is enabled, WhatsApp users will be able to add up to three people in their ongoing video call bringing the total number of participants to four. The feature will put a further dent on the user base of Skype and other consumer video conferencing platforms.

Once the feature is released, WhatsApp users will see an ‘Add Person’ icon in the top right corner of their ongoing video call. The feature might be limited to video call but there is a possibility that it will be available for voice calling as well.

There have been reports doing the rounds that WhatsApp will be adding group voice calling feature to compete with Hike Messenger. However, the addition of group video calling itself should come as an interesting addition to a platform used by more than 1.5 billion users every month.

WhatsApp has been growing significantly in the emerging markets and has introduced new features like the ability to share stickers and post ephemeral messages that disappear after 24 hours. The Facebook-owned messaging platform also introduced WhatsApp Business app for Android in an attempt to connect small business users with its ecosystem.

WhatsApp is also expected to release mobile payments platform in the form of WhatsApp Pay later this month. With over 200 million users in the country, WhatsApp and its new features are poised for success.
