WhatsApp is gradually rolling out two new features to its iOS users. Starting today, if you’re on the latest version of the messaging app on iOS, you’ll be able to quickly switch between voice and video while a call is ongoing. This feature was first seen in the beta version of Android app but appears to have gone live for iOS users in India. There’s also a ‘@’ mentions feature available for group conversations. Here’s a look at the two new features and how they work.

Quick Switch feature

The quick switch feature allows you to quickly switch from an ongoing voice call to a video call at the tap of a button. For iOS users, once you initiate a WhatsApp call with someone, you will see a camera icon which you can tap to send a request to the recipient to change the call into a video call. Upon accepting the request, the call will auto-switch to video mode. It is worth mentioning that the feature will be accessible only if both parties have received the new features. As it is a gradual rollout, some of you might see the feature enabled rightaway while others will receive it over a period of time.

Mentions ‘@’ feature in group chats

Group conversations can get a tad boring and stretched. For those finding it difficult to keep a tab on these long chats and struggling to find which all messages mentioned them, the new ‘@’ feature will come handy. With the new update, in a group conversation, if you have been mentioned in the middle of a long chat, there will be a new ‘@’ option placed over the down arrow.

Tapping on it will take you down to those unread messages which mention you. The feature works if there is a single message that mentions you. So for instance, successive messages have your mention, the ‘@’ option will appear only for the first such unread message.

Other than enhancing communication through its platform, WhatsApp is also testing waters in India for introducing its UPI-based payments support. Currently, in Android beta, the new WhatsApp Payments option will allow you to send and receive money using your UPI details. The Payments feature is set to take on established services including Paytm, Google Tez, and a slew of other UPI-compatible digital payment services in India.
