WhatsApp obliterates its own record, processes 54 billion messages on New Year's eve

WhatsApp ended the year 2013 with a bang having processed more than 54 billion messages on New Year’s eve. It broke its own previous record of 27 billion messages in a day, which it achieved in June last year. It took to Twitter to announce that its more than 400 million users had sent 18 billion messages and received 36 billion messages in a single day.

Looking back at the year, WhatsApp had a great 2013, crossing a big milestone of 400 million active monthly users globally and as far as India is concerned, it has more than 30 million users. WhatsApp is adding roughly 50 million new users every two months and is on track to get past half-a-billion active users before the mid of this year.
