WhatsApp has released a new update for iPhone that brings GDPR compliance and Picture-in-Picture mode. The Facebook-owned social messaging platform has been teasing the PiP mode for sometime now and it is finally rolling out with the new update on iOS.

The new Picture-in-Picture mode supports two services at the moment – Instagram and Facebook. It means that whenever your contacts share a link to video hosted by either one of these services, you will be able to play it right within WhatsApp. You will also be able to continue to watch the video while navigating to another chat and share messages with your friends. While this is the key feature coming to WhatsApp on iOS, there are also other updates related to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that goes live in Europe on May 25.

With the update, WhatsApp now complies with GDPR and will confirm that users are at least 16 years old when they sign up for the first time. The update brings some admin-related features such as the ability to remove admin rights from other participants if you are the admin of that group. You will be able to do that by choosing “Dismiss As Admin” in the “Group info” menu. Also, WhatsApp group admins will now be able to choose who can change a group’s subject, icon and description.

WhatsApp has also silently registered a new domain called ‘wa.me’ that acts a short link for api.whatsapp.com and aims to quickly open a chat in WhatsApp. The URL allows WhatsApp users to quickly chat with their contacts without opening the app by plugging into WhatsApp Web support. The social messaging platform recently saw its co-founder Jan Koum leave the company to follow other endeavors.
