Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday said the world cannot be connected without India. “Very important to connect people in India,” said Zuckerberg, who was interacting with students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
“India is one of the countries where you cannot connect the world without connecting India.” He also said he was very excited to be here and, “the energy here is awesome”. He further added that even thought there are more than 132 million active users in India, the company aims to connect next billion users in the country to Internet very soon. “India is the largest democracy in the world,” Zuckerberg said. “We won’t be able to achieve our mission of connecting the world without connecting India” he added.
Throwing some more light on the topic he talked about how Internet connectivity is important in improving people’s lives. He cited example stating how Internet has made lives of people be it fisherman or students simple by using free Internet.
Facebook recently revealed that India’s user base stands at more than 132 million. India is one of the emerging markets Facebook is focusing on for its Free Basics initiative. The objective is to spread affordable Internet connectivity to rural remote locations in the country.
