Asus has a pedigree in gaming with its portfolio of computers under the Strix and ROG brands. Now it seems the company is planning on bringing this expertise to the smartphone segment.
Asus’ global CEO Jerry Shen was quoted by astig.ph as saying that the company can be expected to launch a smartphone designed for gaming. Shen was speaking at the opening of Asus Philippines’ 100th store, Android Authority reports. At the moment Shen’s quote is all that is known about Asus’ gaming smartphone plans. There is no word on any potential launch date either.
While gaming smartphones as a segment is yet to really take off, lately there’s been a couple of noteworthy launches. It is clear that Asus has the likes of Razer Phone and the new Xiaomi Black Shark in its sights.

The Razer Phone raises the gaming experience by offering a display with 120hz screen refresh rate, which offers a very fluid experience. Black Shark, on the other hand, focuses on top-of-the-line specifications, a dedicated image processing chip from Pixelworks, and a detachable Gamepad.
The Xiaomi Black Shark features a 5.99-inch full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio, Snapdragon 845 SoC, and up to 8GB of RAM. There is a dual-camera (12-megapixel + 20-megapixel) setup at the back, 20-megapixel front-facing camera, 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support, and it runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.
