Xiaomi claims 20,000 Mi 3 units sold in India so far, last batch gone in 5 seconds

After selling the second batch of Mi 3 smartphones in just 5 seconds, Flipkart and Xiaomi have announced they have sold 20,000 units of the Mi 3 in India so far. The first batch of Mi 3 smartphones, which went on sale on July 22 were sold out in under 40 minutes. According to sources, the first batch had less than 10,000 units.

Flipkart changed the process to buy the Mi 3 in the second round where buyers had to simply add the phone into their carts and could make the payment later at their own leisure any time during the day. According to Flipkart, 250,000 buyers were on the Mi 3 page simultaneously, which was four times the peak traffic Flipkart had experienced before.

“At 2:00PM sharp, when the countdown timer on the Mi 3 page hit 00:00:00, users were able to instantly add the product to their shopping carts (resulting in liquidation of the entire inventory in just under 5 seconds) and were then taken to the payment and checkout pages which they completed at their leisure,” the company said in its joint press release with Xiaomi.

Assuming that Xiaomi’s 20,000 units number is indeed true and being optimistic by assuming it had sold 10,000 units in the first sale and trusting Flipkart’s number of 250,000 simultaneous visitors on the Mi 3 page at the time of sale, there were at least 25X eligible buyers than the number of units available for sale.

The Xiaomi Mi 3 will be available again on August 5, but unlike the last time anyone who’s interested in buying will have to register again. You can register for the Mi 3 here.
