With its affordable yet feature-rich smartphones, Xiaomi wears the crown of the most-selling brand in India already. As of August last year, the company had already sold over 25 million units in the country since its entry three years ago. Adding a feather to the cap, Xiaomi has been recorded as the biggest vendor in India’s richest market of Maharashtra during Q4, 2017.
According to the latest report by CMR, Xiaomi overthrew longstanding leader Samsung with a market share of 31.2 percent. In comparison, Samsung held a share of 15.3 percent. Xiaomi’s success is attributed to the impressive sales of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone.
In the October-December quarter of 2017, Xiaomi outshined Samsung in terms of sales in Maharashtra. In the state, the company accounted for 13.7 percent of its total sales during the said period. In the state, Xiaomi opened two Mi Homes during the said period, which also increased its presence in the state and helped boost the sales. Earlier this year, Xiaomi opened its third Mi Home store in the state.
Other Chinese smartphone makers, Vivo, Oppo, and Lenovo (including Motorola) also ranked in the top five smartphones list in Maharashtra in Q4, 2017. The top 5 smartphone brands sold over 84 percent of the smartphones.
As the report notes, the smartphone sales were primarily replacement or upgrade. The net subscriber addition during the said quarter was negative in the state of Maharashtra. The decrease registered was of 362,420 subscribers. It was due to R-Com and Aircel subscriber reduction during Q4, 2017 in the state.
Xiaomi’s growth is attributed to the replacements and upgrades, where users moved from their existing smartphones to switch to a Xiaomi device. Meanwhile, homegrown 26 percent Micromax owners discontinued using the smartphones during the quarter. Other brands which were among the top five losers include Intex, Karbonn, Sony Mobiles and iBall. the top five losing brands accounted for 66.5 percent of the smartphones that were discontinued by users in the state during the said period.
