With new entrants and some old ones making comebacks, this year was made interesting in terms of how the market pie continues to be shared. And a recent IDC report tells us just that.

As per Q3 2017 smartphone shipment report by IDC, while the largest market share remains with Samsung, Xiaomi has turned out to be the best performer. Xiaomi has enjoyed an impressive year with a near 100 percent year-on-year growth. Samsung, however, still leads the way with a 22 percent market share. Apple, stands on a distant second, with a market share of 12 percent.

Additionally, IDC’s report on smartphone shipments in this quarter reveals that HMD Global recorded a year on year growth exceeding 50 percent. Which is remarkable, considering most other companies, except Xiaomi, recorded a negative growth.

Nokia ranks eighth in the top ten smartphone manufacturers list, above LG and Lenovo. While the IDC report only states Nokia’s year-on-year growth, IndiaToday reveals that did some calculations from a chart included in the report to figure out how many handsets HMD Global‘s Nokia actually sold.

With a 0.05 tolerance, they estimate that Nokia sold about 20.8 million phones (feature phones + smartphones) in Q3 2017. Thanks to data from IDC, we already know that Nokia sold 14.4 million phones in Q2 2017 (12 million feature phones and 1.4 million smartphones) and 12.1 million phones in Q1 2017 (12 million feature phones and 0.1 million smartphones).

According to their calculation, HMD Global and Microsoft together sold 35 million feature phones globally – 8.9 percent of the market. Out of the 21 million phones sold in Q3 2017, it is unknown at the moment how many were smartphones. Rumours claim that Nokia sold close to 3.4 million smartphones in Q3 2017.

In India and China, on the other hand, Chinese Vendors led the way. Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have exceeded Samsung and Apple in China, while in India Samsung remains dominant by almost a hairline. The Chinese brands are also threatening domestic brands like Micromax.
