Xiaomi’s Mi TV 4A launch was possibly the shortest product launch in history, lasting not even a full 8 minutes. While fans rejoiced at the impressive pricing of the smart LED TVs, the company tucked a teaser clip of an upcoming product, many failed to notice.

Towards the end of the webcast, Xiaomi teased what appears to be a smartphone, with the launch date of March 14. Just the side of the smartphone is shown and it is difficult to say as to which model it could be. However, if we go by the rumors, the company is expected to launch the budget Redmi 5 in India. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 will be the successor to the Redmi 4 which was launched last year and will add to the budget segment. The Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus (Redmi Note 5) are already available in India and the Redmi 5 will complete the series.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 specifications

The Redmi 5 was first launched in home country China last year. Recently, a 4GB variant of the smartphone was also launched. As for specifications, the smartphone is equipped with a 5.7-inch HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. This makes it one of the affordable options with the new narrow-bezel display.

Under the hood, Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC is paired with 2GB/3GB/4GB of RAM with 16GB/32GB of internal storage which is expandable via microSD card. For optics, there’s a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera.

The smartphone is fuelled by a 3,300mAh battery. On the software front, the Redmi 5 runs Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box with MIUI 9 layered atop. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, hybrid dual SIM/microSD slot, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, a microUSB port, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

It remains to be seen if the company will introduce all the three storage variants of the Redmi 5 in India and how aggressively will they be priced. For reference, the 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM model is priced at RMB 799 (Rs 7,800 approximately), while the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM model is priced at RMB 899 (Rs 8,800 approximately). The 4GB RAM +32GB ROM model, on the other hand, is priced at RMB 1,099 (approximately Rs 11,000).
