Xiaomi took the lead in the Indian smartphone market earlier this year, dethroning traditional top-selling brand Samsung after many years. The company has since made every effort to retain its position as the country’s favorite smartphone brand, and the efforts have been showing. Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain took to Twitter to announce that the company had sold 10 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2018-19.
Highest number of smartphones sold in any quarter by any brand in India! 💪
That's right! @XiaomiIndia created history: ~10 Mn in Q2.

According to Jain’s tweet, this is a record for any smartphone brand in any quarter in India, and cites estimated numbers by Canalys. This would mean that Xiaomi has an approximate share of about one-third of the smartphone market in India, which saw 30 million smartphones shipped in total in Q1 2018. Xiaomi and Samsung are believed to control a combined 60 percent of the Indian smartphone market together.
Credit for the strong sales numbers can be placed on the success of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro, which have cumulatively sold over five million units since launch. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 has also been a big success in India, where it has taken over the market by offering devices that have been designed with India in mind. While Xiaomi also sells premium devices in the country, the serious numbers tend to come from its devices priced at under Rs 15,000.

Xiaomi is also set to launch the Mi A2 in India in the coming weeks, which will be its next big smartphone in the country. The Mi A2 will run on stock Android 8.1 Oreo, and being a part of the Android One program, will receive faster software updates. The Mi A2 is the successor to the Mi A1, which was launched last year to praise from users and experts alike.
