Every year, smartphones follow some trend. Last year, it was the full screen displays with 18:9 aspect ratio, this year, you have the full screen displays with iPhone X-like notch on the top. But that’s not all, after Vivo X20, X21 UD, and Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS, a handful of flagship smartphones are expected to come with under-display fingerprint sensors. After launching the Mi MIX 2S, Xiaomi is expected to launch the flagship Mi 7 smartphone in the coming weeks, and the company’s CEO has confirmed that it will come with an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi recently added the Mi Mix 2S teardown photos on its official Weibo handle. One of the users jokingly posted saying that the Mi 7 could feature an under-display fingerprint sensor, to which Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed by responding that it will indeed come with the new in-display sensor.

While it was a light-hearted conversation, we have come across leaked renders of the smartphone that show full screen display on the front, and dual cameras at the back, and it does not show the presence of physical fingerprint sensor. From what we know so far, the Xiaomi Mi 7 is codenamed Dipper, and will feature a full screen OLED display with a notch.

Under the hood, the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core SoC, but there is no word on the RAM and storage capacity. Rumors also hint at dual 16-megapixel rear cameras with optical zoom functionality, and AI capabilities. To keep things ticking, the smartphone could pack a 3,400mAh battery with wireless charging capabilities.

Besides Mi 7, there are also rumors about the Mi 7 Plus smartphone that is codenamed Ursa. It is rumoured to come with an under-display fingerprint sensor, and an advanced facial recognition feature. It is also expected to come with Snapdragon 845 SoC, dual-rear cameras and a 4,000mAh battery.

There is no word on when Xiaomi will launch the Mi 7, but rumors hint at a launch timeframe of June this year. Ahead of the Mi MIX 2S launch, Xiaomi teased the smartphone for almost a month, and if it follows a similar strategy, the same could be expected with the Mi 7 and Mi 7 Plus too.
