Xiaomi Mi 8, the flagship smartphone commemorating the 8th anniversary of the Chinese startup, will launch on May 31. The smartphone is shaping up to be the most premium device yet from the company and is expected to bring 3D facial recognition and in-display fingerprint sensor. While the smartphone will be launched at an event in Shenzhen, the device will not be exclusive to the Chinese market.

A Reddit post claims that Xiaomi Mi 8 will initially be sold only in its home market. But the company plans to make it available in other countries as well. The official poster appearing on the online discussion platform suggests Xiaomi Mi 8 will be released in eight other countries soon after the official launch on May 31.

Xiaomi recently confirmed why it is calling its next flagship device as Mi 8 and not Mi 7. The company says the new smartphone brings many new technologies to the mobile platform that it didn’t seem apt to call it Mi 7. The company is indirectly claiming that Mi 8 brings two generational laptop to Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone.

In terms of markets, the Xiaomi Mi 8 should become available in China first. The smartphone should then roll out to other markets including India, Vietnam, Thailand, France, Italy, Russia, Spain and Egypt. Xiaomi has been expanding its presence in the European market and has opened its own retail stores to directly reach consumers.

In terms of specifications, Xiaomi Mi 8 is likely to feature a 6.2-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels and 19:9 aspect ratio. The leaked renders suggest it will feature a notched display to house sensors similar to Apple’s Face ID and enable 3D facial recognition on an Android smartphone for the first time.

Under the hood, it will boast of a Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The device will be backed by a 3,300mAh battery and could be the first smartphone to support Quick Charge 4.0. It is also expected to feature an under-display fingerprint sensor similar to the one found on Vivo X21 and upcoming Vivo Nex.

At tomorrow’s event, Xiaomi is also expected to launch the Mi Band 3 and MIUI 10. The MIUI 10 is expected to bring major redesign to Xiaomi’s forked UI and bring iPhone X-style gestures. There are also reports emerging that Mi 8 will be accompanied by a special edition device called Mi 8 SE. There is no word on the pricing just yet but this could compete with OnePlus 6 and Honor 10.
