The Xiaomi Mi A2 is the latest mid-range smartphone from the Chinese company, and is priced from Rs 16,999. While it’s more expensive than last year’s Mi A1, Xiaomi does have more on offer on the Mi A2 that it hopes will justify the price. Furthermore, Xiaomi will hope to woo customers with its distinct advantages for the price. However, the competition is no slouch, and the sub Rs 20,000 price segment is a particularly interesting one right now.

Taking on the new Xiaomi Mi A2 are the Huawei P20 Lite, which is slightly more expensive, and the Motorola Moto G6, which starts at just a bit lower. We compare these three phones to give you an idea of what to expect from the top devices in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment.

Price and availability

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is priced at Rs 16,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option, while it will be soon launching another variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. In comparison, the Huawei P20 Lite is priced at Rs 19,999 for the single 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option, while the Moto G6 starts at Rs 13,999 for the 3GB RAM / 32GB storage option.

Additionally, all three devices are available through Amazon India. While the Huawei and Moto devices generally have continuous availability through open sale, the Xiaomi device will initially be made available through flash sales with limited availability. When it comes to offline availability, the Moto G6 can be bought through Moto Hub stores across the country, while the Xiaomi Mi A2 will also be made available through Mi Home stores, and other authorized Xiaomi dealers. The Huawei P20 Lite is currently only available to buy online.

Specifications and software

It is in this field that the big differences between these three devices can be seen. The Xiaomi Mi A2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, and comes with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You also get a 3,000mAh battery, but no fast charger in the box, although the phone does support Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0+ in India.

In comparison, the Huawei P20 Lite is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC, and comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, with Huawei’s native fast charging standard to charge its 3,000mAh battery. The Moto G6 has the lowest-grade chipset of the lot, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

All three phones run Android Oreo, although only the Mi A2 runs on Android 8.1, while the other two run on Android 8.0. The Mi A2 also arguably has the biggest software advantage thanks to being an official Android One device. It thus runs stock Android, and will be in line for faster software updates. The Huawei P20 Lite runs EMUI 8.0, while the Moto G6 runs on Moto’s own version of near-stock Android.

Design and Display

The notch is arguably the biggest deal of the year when it comes to smartphones, and the edge-to-edge notched screen is now making its way to even affordable devices. However, of the three phones here, only the Huawei P20 Lite sports a notched screen. It has a 5.84-inch 19:9 full-HD+ display, but the edge-to-edge screen has a form factor that makes for the smallest and easiest phone to hold here.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 and Moto have 18:9 screens, which are full-HD+ in resolution. The Moto G6 has a 5.7-inch screen, while the Xiaomi Mi A2 has the largest screen here at 6 inches. All three phones have IPS LCD screens. And while the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Huawei P20 Lite have their fingerprint sensors at the back, the Moto sports it at the front.

The glass vs metal argument is a big one in the smartphone space, whether we’re talking budget or premium. And while most premium phones are going the glass way, the style is now making its way to the mid-range segment as well. The Huawei P20 Lite and Moto G6 sport glass backs, with the former being the best looking phone here in our opinion. The Xiaomi Mi A2 has an aluminum unibody build, which makes it, in theory, the toughest device of the three.

Camera

The dual-camera setup is now a fairly standard feature on most smartphones, and all three phones here come with dual-camera setups at the back. The Xiaomi Mi A2 sports a 12-megapixel + 20-megapixel setup at the back, and a 20-megapixel front camera with flash. The rear camera allows depth-sensing as well as improved low-light and wide-angle photography.

The Huawei P20 Lite has a 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel setup at the back, which allows depth-sensing for portrait shots, and a 24-megapixel front camera. The Moto G6 comes with a 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel setup at the back, and a 16-megapixel front camera with flash. The phone uses its depth sensing for various software-based effects, including selective black-and-white and spot-color.
