Xiaomi’s philosophy has been to provide the best products at the best prices, and as a result, a lot of its efforts have been focused on more affordable segments. The company has some of the most capable products for the price in India, and are often unmatched by the competition when it comes to pricing. Prime examples of this are the Redmi Note 4 and newly launched Xiaomi Mi A1. Over the last year, we’ve seen no flagship Xiaomi products launching in India, with both the Mi MIX and Mi 6 being skipped.
That’s set to change with the new Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. With confirmation that the phone will indeed be launched in India, Xiaomi is set to bring its first flagship device in over a year to Indian shores. And what a smartphone this is. We were at the launch event, and were able to get some hands-on time with the new Xiaomi Mi MIX 2.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has a large 5.99-inch full-HD+ screen, and just like on the Mi MIX, it dominates the front of the device. The screen is a bit smaller on the Mi MIX 2, and thanks to the high screen-to-body ratio, the phone feels more like a typical 5.5-inch phone. It has an 18:9 screen aspect ratio, which also makes for a reduced ‘chin’. The top and sides of the front of the phone feature slim bezels, and just above the screen is the earpiece.
Unlike on the Mi MIX, the Mi MIX 2 comes with a regular speaker and earpiece, and doesn’t transmit sound through the screen itself. This comes after complaints that the quality of sound was not up to the mark, and could even be heard by anyone standing next to you. There is, of course, an ordinary loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone as well, along with the USB Type-C port for charging and data transfers. The dominating screen is what makes this smartphone so beautiful. It’s quite impressive to hold a phone that is almost entirely screen, and the lack of a ‘forehead’ is particularly appealing. Of course, the sensors and front camera that typically occupy the forehead of a phone need a place to go; the proximity sensor is built into the screen itself, while the camera is at the bottom on the chin of the phone. It’s a rather awkward position for the front camera, but it’s a small compromise to make for the advantages on offer.
Top-spec, top build
With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and a minimum of 6GB of RAM on offer, the Mi MIX 2 is a powerhouse device that lives up to flagship expectations. There’s also a 12-megapixel rear camera (no dual-camera setup here) and fingerprint sensor at the back, along with a 3,400mAh battery. You get Android Nougat out-of-the-box for now with MIUI 9 on top, and internal storage options of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
A special ceramic edition that will be launched in November will come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and will feature a ceramic unibody build. The regular edition that will go on sale in China in September will feature a body that is a combination of ceramic (at the back) and metal (at the sides). While I didn’t get a chance to play with the ceramic edition, the metal-ceramic edition is beautiful to hold as well. It feels solid along the sides and frame, and while the back does seem a bit brittle and a fingerprint and smudge magnet, it’s still among the best phones I’ve had the pleasure to use.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is stunning. It’s different from anything else that anyone has to offer today, thanks to its massive screen-to-body ratio and form-filling display. And thanks to enough power under the hood and a decent camera, the Mi MIX 2 has what it takes to compete against the best flagship devices around. And now that we know that the device will be available in India, we have more reason to rejoice.
The Mi MIX 2 is an absolute stunner at first look, and we look forward to bringing you our full review of the device. Stay tuned for our continuing coverage of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2.
