Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, an updated version of company’s second generation Mi MIX smartphone, is expected to launch at MWC later this month. The smartphone has leaked few times in the past few months and it is expected to bring another major design change to the Mix series.
While the smartphone has been spotted in the form of renders on Weibo, China’s microblogging platform, the authenticity of such leaks were always questionable. On Weibo, the renders are mostly photoshopped images that are too artistic and often far from the real device. Now, XDA Developers claims that Mi MIX 2S does indeed exist and has even managed to corroborate some of its key features and specifications.
The publications cites unreleased firmware files as the source for details about the upcoming Mi MIX 2S. The firmware files indicate that the Mi MIX 2S is codenamed “Polaris” and will indeed use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. The device is also said to pack a 3,400mAh battery, which is commendable for a device of this size. The report further adds that Mi MIX 2S will run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and will be compatible with Project Treble, which aims to simplify the process of future software update.
Other details suggest that the device will have a display with Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 resolution, same as existing Mi MIX 2 and support for 18:9 aspect ratio. While there isn’t much detail about the rumored dual camera setup, the new Mi MIX 2S is said to include AI camera features to support scene recognition feature similar to one found on Huawei Mate 10 and Honor View 10. The binary files within the firmware do hint at use of Sony IMX363 image sensor.
The firmware also confirms that Mi MIX 2S will be a dual-SIM device and support an IR blaster. It will also have an LED light for notifications alongside other MIUI features. Xiaomi is known for refreshing its flagship devices once every year and it is not clear why the company is refreshing it within few months of its launch.
According to a leaked render, the Mi MIX 2S is said to have really bezel-less design with the front camera being moved to the top right corner. Some reports even suggest that the Mi MIX 2S will be priced at 3,499 Yuan (around Rs 35,000) when it is officially announced later this month. It is now clear that Xiaomi is indeed working on a new MIX smartphone but will be announced at MWC, that remains to be seen.
