At its annual product launch event in Shenzhen today, Xiaomi launched seven new devices as it prepares to go public. The company launched Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Mi 8 SE, 75-inch Mi TV 4, Mi Band 3, MIUI 10 and Mi VR. While the key attraction were the new Mi 8 flagship smartphones, the Mi VR paves way for virtual reality on the go.

At the event, Xiaomi announced the availability Mi VR standalone. The Mi VR standalone, as the name implies, is an untethered device that works without the need for a PC or a mobile device. The device features a fast switch 2K display, a custom display solution designed for virtual reality application. Xiaomi says use of a custom designed display solution allows for a smoother experience while experiencing VR content on the device.

Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone has been designed in collaboration with Facebook-owned Oculus and is identical to Oculus Go that went on sale in the US early this month. For the Mi VR, Oculus has also built a custom optics for optimized 3D graphics and smooth integration between hardware and software.

The standalone Mi VR headset is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset and it comes with spatial audio drivers built into the headset directly. The VR headset provides immersive sound experience without the need to bring separate audio device and features a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can connect your own headset while experiencing VR content.

The Mi VR also comes bundled with a controller that includes a touch surface, back and home button and a trigger. The controller can be used to play an action game or draw in virtual reality. “The sensors inside the controller is capable of converting your natural movements into VR,” Oculus said in a released statement.

Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone comes with a plethora of VR applications available on Oculus Store. In addition, the device also supports other VR platforms like YOUKU VR, Asmik Ace, Juant China, Within among others in China. Xiaomi says the Mi VR comes with support for over 1,000 Oculus optimized games. The Mi VR is supported by a 2,600mAh battery and comes in two different sizes. The standard model with 32GB storage is priced at RMB 1499 (around Rs 15,800) while the 64GB model is priced at RMB 1,799 (around Rs 19,000).

Oculus had first showcased the Oculus Go standalone VR headset built by Xiaomi at Oculus Connect 4 developer conference in October last year. At a retail price of $199, Oculus Go was seen as the most accessible VR headset yet and with Mi VR standalone, Xiaomi is bringing that same experience to the Chinese market. It is not clear whether Xiaomi will expand the device to other markets like India, Vietnam and Thailand as well.
