Is Xiaomi ready to bring the Redmi 5 to India? Possibly. Xiaomi has sent out media invites for an event it is hosting on February 14 in New Delhi. This is the first launch by the company in 2018. Besides event details, the invite just reads a big number five on it, which has camera frames on its corners.
Though the invite doesn’t mention any detail of exactly which will be launched next week, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 was launched in China in December last year, and it may be India’s turn next. It was also recently reported that Xiaomi India’s first launch of the year could be the Redmi 5 Plus that will retail as the Redmi Note 5 in the country. Simultaneously, there have also been reports in the past that the company was mulling dropping the ‘Note’ branding from its phones. So the only way to be sure what Xiaomi’s going to launch on February 14, is that you stay tuned to this space.
If the reports are true, the Redmi 5 will be a budget contender in the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. However, given the bezel-less display and large battery as some of its talking points, it will be interesting to see how it changes the game in the affordable range.
Xiaomi launched Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones with full view display and smaller bezels in China in December 2017.
