As promised at the last Mi TV 4A launch event, Xiaomi is today holding a Redmi launch event. The device expected to be announced is the Redmi 5, which debuted in China last year. The event will be streamed online at 3:00PM IST today, and you can check out the details here.
What we know so far is that the soon-to-be-launched Redmi smartphone will sold exclusively on Amazon India, and will be a ‘compact powerhouse’, as Xiaomi has been teasing it.
When launched in China, the Redmi 5 was made available in three variants, which differed basis the storage capacity and RAM of the devices. Coupled with 2GB of RAM is a 16GB storage variant priced at RMB 799 (Rs 7,800 approximately). Then there is a 3GB RAM variant with 32GB storage, which was priced at RMB 899 (Rs 8,800 approximately), and a 4GB RAM and 32GB ROM model, priced at RMB 1,099 (approximately Rs 11,000). It is unclear if the company will launch all the three variants together in India as well.
As for other specifications, the smartphone is equipped with a 5.7-inch HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core SoC. There’s an option to expand the storage via microSD card.
For optics, the Redmi 5 is equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera. It is fueled by a 3,300mAh battery. On the software front, the Redmi 5 runs Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box with MIUI 9 layered atop. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, hybrid dual SIM/microSD slot, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, a microUSB port, and 3.5mm headphone jack.
